Sweetgrass Hand
"Sweetgrass Hand" is showing a part of heritage connected to the Gullah Geechee Culture. Sweetgrass Basket weaving is tradition and an occupation for some of Geechee people. Gullah Geechee Culture is a group of descendants of African slaves who habited on the Sea Islands and coast from Wilmington NC to Jacksonville, FL, also known as the Gullah Geechee Corridor. However, the Gullah Geechee Culture and land is disappearing because of gentrification by the big corporations who are taking the land which is erasing history. With this image, I hope to aid in bringing awareness to this social justice issue. Lastly, this image correlates with Black Joy because, Geechee is very proud people who loves their traditions alive and want to preserve their traditions.
