Don “DonCee” Coulter is an American fabric artist based in Columbus, Ohio. His work is a vibrant fusion of textiles, colors, and cultural references. DonCee discovered his love for art at an early age, influenced by his grandfather, father, and uncle. Hip-hop culture and pop music played a significant role in shaping his artistic sensibilities. He began his career as an editorial illustrator, cartoonist, and painter, drawing inspiration from cubism and fashion1. His mixed-media pieces are environmentally friendly and often incorporate materials like leather, suede, denim, and synthetic hair. His work explores themes of nostalgia, identity, and social issues. Notably, “The Seventies Groove” captures the vibrancy of the 1970s while addressing contemporary issues like racial justice. It features details like “BLM” on a license plate and “8 minutes 46 seconds” on a taxicab, referencing George Floyd’s murder2.Another piece, “Zen,” portrays a tranquil scene with symbols of peace, including the ancient swastika (originally representing well-being) before its appropriation by the Nazi Party2. StatementMy artwork has a unique look that is constantly revolving. Some have described it as having a three-dimensional / high-definition effect due to the incredible attention to detail. I break down my subjects in different planes before considering color or texture. Texture plays a major role in the overall appeal of each piece. Leather and suede have been my fabric of choice, as their texture translates well in my pieces. My only apparatus is the xacto knife. It allows me to make precise cuts and gain control over rugged fabrics such as denim.
