Clifford Darrett

Clifford Darrett, born in Evansville, Indiana, has always had the “natural ability“to draw. By his own description, Mr. Darrett considers himself a contemporary genre artist, whose style is realism. A thirty-year member of The Trade Winds Club, a travel club for couples, Mr. Darrett incorporates into his art, themes from American life, as well as those from his travels to Puerto Rico, Jamaica, the Bahamas and The Virgin Islands. The mediums of his artistic expression include oil, pastels and airbrush with acrylics and watercolor. Mr. Darrett is a charter member of the African American Visual Artists Guild (AAVAG) and a member of The Co.,  Mr. Darrett’s paintings and reproduction prints are included in many private and public collections in the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana area. His most recent paintings in the public arena are three paintings for the new Care Source building in Dayton, two paintings purchased for the new Vectren Building in Evansville. He has had some of his works on exhibit at: the Actors Theater, in Louisville, Kentucky, The Main Library in Henderson Kentucky, Evansville Museum of Arts, Evansville, Indiana, The Studio Museum of Harlem, New York City, The Black Cultural Festival of Dayton, Ohio, The Co (formerly The Dayton Visual Arts Center), The Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, Wilberforce, Ohio. Among the national juried exhibitions Mr. Darrett can list are: “Black Heritage through Visual Rhythms 2016 - 2023”, "Black Creativity 1996 and 1997, 2002, 2003 and 2021" at The Chicago Museum Of Science and Industry, Indiana Black Expo-96, 97,98, Indianapolis, Indiana, "Innervisions: Individuality and Creativity Among Ohio Artist of African Descent" at The National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center, Wilberforce, Ohio, "Clifford Darrett: Recent Paintings", A one Man exhibit at The Central State University Dayton, May and June 2018. Mr. Darrett's paintings are included in the major exhibition and books: “Black Romantic” (The Figurative Impulse of African American Art), Studio Museum in Harlem, curated by Thelma Golden (April 2002), "Dayton Black Skyscrapers", 2011 - 2024, artwork and published Books project for the Dayton Public School System founded by Willis 'Bing" Davis. Mr. Darrett is a member, past President and Board member Emeritus of The African American Visual Artist Guild, Incorporated, of Dayton, Ohio. He is also a member of the Percussion Arts Society (PAS), and Dayton Musicians Association (Local 101-473). Mr. Darrett was one of the recipients of the Individual Artists Fellowships for July 1, 1997 to June 1998 and July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002, and July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006 from The Montgomery County Regional Arts & Cultural District of Dayton, Ohio. Clifford retired from General Motors in 1998 and also plays Latin Percussion for many bands in the Dayton area. He is married to his wife of 55 years, Marva, has one daughter Kim and two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He spends his retirement, painting, playing music and traveling. Many of Clifford’s artwork are in many public businesses and private homes.

Statement

I am a contemporary genre artist, whose style is realism. My goal is to paint positive images that anyone would like to hang in their home or business.
