Ingrid Smith

Ingrid Jay Smith currently lives in Cincinnati, OH where she creates her art. She was born in Toledo, OH, lived in Cleveland, OH, San Jose, CA, Edwards AFB, CA, and Media, PA.

Ingrid developed an early interest in art influenced by museum visits, friends, and her mother's travels and the art her mother purchased from the many different countries.

In 1971, Ingrid received her BA in Elementary Education from the University of Cincinnati. She taught school for over 30 years and developed curriculum, which at times, included an artistic project for students.

While living in CA and PA, Ingrid took and number of art classes in silk screening, painting, and lithograph. She also designed magazine covers for a community business. At Miami University(OH), while working on her Masters in Educational Media, she co-wrote and designed a book and completed art driven projects.

Ingrid Smith's work is characterized as abstract folk art. She utilizes a variety of found objects, such as buttons, beads, jewelry, fabric, paper, acrylic and oil paints, macrame, and crochet. She has exhibited her art at the Arts Consortium in Cincinnati.

Every year, Ingrid has designed Kwanzaa cards, ceramic tiles, and other handmade gifts for family and friends.Currently, she is working on a new project exploring new mediums which combine the old and her latest techniques. Ingrid believes that her art should impart positivity, symbolism, and growth. One of her goals is to complete a portfolio which marries art with her poetry, a compilation of her many poems in an artistic journey.

Statement

I am an abstract folk artist who uses just about anything to create art. The inspiration for my art originates from my visits to museums, art classes, and my mom's travels to different countries and the artifacts she has brought back. More recently, I have viewed more exhibits which feature lesser-known artists which utilize similar techniques. I'm also inspired by the different symbols, shapes, lines, and colors in African designed fabric.

When I took quilting classes with other women, they inspired me with their ideas, skills, patience, and masterpieces. I utilized what I gleaned from them to create abstract designs. I gather different objects such as:  buttons, beads, paper, jewelry, to embellish my designs. I enjoy taking a blank canvas, adding acrylic paint, paper, and other objects. My design may begin with one idea and transform into something totally different.

My goals are to continue visiting museums across the country and internationally, taking classes in watercolor, woodcutting, sculpture, and pottery to broaden my art experiences.
